Dalmeny St Algester Contemporary Interior Home Renovation Before and After

This Algester home was due for a much-needed refresh. The living room, with its yellow carpet, patterned wallpaper, and heavy curtains, felt dark and outdated. The homeowners wanted to move forward with a look that’s brighter, cleaner, and more modern. As part of a larger renovation, the goal for this area was to improve lighting, update finishes, and create a more welcoming atmosphere suited to modern living and entertaining.

Before: The Problem with the Old Interior

Old living room with yellow carpet, patterned wallpaper, and outdated finishes.

Before the renovation of this Algester home, the living room was weighed down by outdated features from a bygone era. The aged yellow-toned carpet dominated the space and the competing patterns of the curtains, main wallpaper, and the doorway feature wall visually cluttered the room, The freestanding fireplace had character, but the decorative metal cover, rusted pipe, and mixed stone tile backdrop detracted from its appeal. Also, the dated ceiling fan and dim lighting added to the overall tired appearance of the room.

Project Details: How We Transformed the Interior

Brightening and Opening Up the Space

The first step was clearing away the visual weight of the original finishes. We remove the patterned wallpaper, aged yellow carpet, and curtains to create a blank canvas. Painting the walls in crisp white instantly lifted the room, reflecting more natural light and giving it a fresher, more open feel. If you’re after a similar tone, Dulux Casper White Quarter is a great option for that soft, clean look. To improve the overall flow, the wall near the entryway was slightly adjusted, creating a bit more breathing room around the adjacent door and making the layout feel more generous.

Clean, Minimalist Aesthetic

We replaced the busy layers of patterns and texture with a clean, modern look. Timber-look vinyl plank flooring introduced warmth and subtle grain, while a soft neutral palette and clean lines kept the overall style simple and elegant. We often use similar finishes in bathroom renovations as well. If you’re considering updating your bathroom floors, you can check out our post on flooring options. The main entry door was also replaced with a more streamlined design to suit the minimal aesthetic. By removing visual clutter, we allowed the room’s key features, like the fireplace and window, to shine.

Improved Natural and Artificial Lighting

Without the curtains, natural light now flew freely through the windows, brightening the room throughout the day. To support the new layout, we installed LED downlights in the ceiling, creating an even wash of artificial light for evening use.

Preserving Character with a Modern Twist

While most of the room received a modern update, we retained the original freestanding fireplace as a tribute to the home’s character. The dated tile surround and decorative cover were removed, the pipe was restored and repainted, and the fireplace was visually simplified to help integrate it into the new design.

Overcoming Design Challenges

While this renovation didn’t involve structural changes, it still required thoughtful planning. Balancing the desire for a modern look with the need to preserve character meant selectively removing outdated elements without stripping the room of its identity. Refinishing the fireplace, repainting window frames, and updating lighting all needed to be coordinated to maintain consistency in style and function. Small choices like retaining and repainting original features instead of replacing them helped keep the renovation efficient without compromising the final result.

This living room was just one aspect of a full home makeover in Algester, which also included a modern kitchen upgrade, a total bathroom renovation and exterior updates.
