Before: The Problem with the Old Bathroom
Located in Power St in Norman Park, the overall aesthetic of the original bathroom lacked the style and sophistication the homeowners were after. At the top of the list for the homeowners was their distaste for the beige marble-look tiles, and bulky vanity, and the chrome finishings, which they felt didn’t reflect their personal taste.
The lighting was also a point the homeowners wanted to change. The reflective surfaces of the glossy tiles made the space feel busy instead of the soothing spa-like vibe the homeowners wanted to create. The standard ceiling downlights and a single sconce didn’t quite create the warm, layered ambience the homeowners wanted. Although functional, the bathroom lacked the refined finishes the homeowners were after. They sought a more relaxing, luxurious design and something truly elegant and unique.
Project Details: How We Transformed the Bathroom
The homeowners were seeking a refined, elegant bathroom that balanced style with practicality. While the existing layout worked well, the overall aesthetic felt didn’t align with their preferences. Our design focused on elevating the space through rich textures, modern lighting, and luxurious materials, bringing a calm, cohesive atmosphere to life. The result is a space that blends everyday function with the indulgent comfort of a spa-inspired retreat.
Enhancing the Look and Feel
To create a more high-end visual identity, we replaced the original beige wall tiles with large-format grey marble-look tiles. These added depth, contrast, and a timeless appeal. As a refined visual detail, we added vertical kit kat tiles as a vanity splashback, which was a subtle yet effective detail that added texture and visual interest while complementing the floating double vanity and basins.
Upgrading the Vanity and Lighting
A custom floating double vanity was installed with ribbed front detailing and a sleek marble benchtop, paired with two high-profile fluted vessel basins. Matte black tapware and matching accessories provide contrast while keeping the palette clean and cohesive. For ambience, we introduced elegant wall sconces and a statement chandelier above the bath, adding softness, warmth and a hint of glamour.
Improving Layout and Storage
Though the layout remained mostly unchanged, we increased usable surface space and upgraded storage with soft-close cabinetry beneath the vanity. We also replaced the bulky mirrored cabinets with streamlined arched mirrors, visually opening up the space and aligning with the new design direction.
Design Challenges and Considerations
Since we didn’t touch the floor plan, the transformation relied heavily on visual design elements to create a more open and luxurious feel. Every detail was carefully considered to enhance the sense of space and cohesion. Balancing the homeowners’ desire for a high-end aesthetic with everyday functionality also played a key role in the design process. Finishes were selected not just for their beauty, but also for their durability and practicality. The integration of new materials, including the large-format marble-look tiles and vertically stacked splashback tiles, required precise planning to ensure a seamless, polished result.
