Birdwood Terrace Toowong Classic Bathroom Renovation Before and After

This bathroom in Toowong was in desperate need of a transformation. Originally serving as both a bathroom and laundry, the space was cramped, outdated, and lacked functionality. The homeowners wanted to renovate the entire home, including this dilapidated bathroom, into a bright, modern bathroom that would be both stylish and practical, with a layout designed for everyday use. Our team was tasked with completely redesigning the space, creating a functional, cohesive design that would give homeowners a bathroom that met all their needs while eliminating the inefficiencies of the old combined layout.

Before: The Problem with the Old Bathroom

The near original condition bathroom in this Toowong home was outdated and severely in need of a renovation. The vanity, though featuring storage and drawers, was poorly positioned, making the space feel cramped and inefficient. To the left of the vanity was originally the washing machine, which was removed to make way for a better layout. Above the vanity was a glass countertop that offered much-needed counter space but still felt out of place in the overall design. The small, damaged mirror above the vanity didn’t serve its intended purpose, offering barely any reflection and contributing to the room’s dated, worn feel.

The shower had a dated setup with old fixtures and no glass screen, giving it an enclosed feel. The pastel green and yellow tiles, along with the worn-out flooring, also gave the bathroom a retro, dated vibe. Poor lighting and ventilation made the room feel smaller, and the overall layout lacked flow and functionality. As a QBCC-licensed contractor, we made sure the renovation met all the right standards, giving them a fresh, functional, and compliant space.

Project Details: How We Transformed the Bathroom

Improving Layout and Functionality

The original bathroom had a poor layout, with the vanity poorly positioned next to the washer and an inefficient use of space. To create more room, we repositioned the vanity to the left side of the bathroom, opening up the floor area and making the room feel much larger. The old washer was removed and the plumbing was reworked to ensure better use of space, making the layout more cohesive and efficient.

Modernising Aesthetics

We selected classic white tiles for walls, creating a bright, timeless look that made the space feel larger. Neutral floor tiles added warmth and balance. The old shower setup was replaced with a modern, full-sized glass-screened shower that greatly improved the bathroom’s appearance and functionality. We replaced the old vanity with a sleek, new design, featuring practical storage and soft-close drawers. A larger mirror was installed, adding functionality and helping to reflect natural light, making the space feel more open. Modern chrome fixtures were installed for a sleek, minimalistic look that aligned with the homeowners’ desire for a fuss-free design.

Enhancing Lighting

To create a brighter, more welcoming atmosphere, we installed energy-efficient LED downlights. The shower area now benefited from natural light streaming through the window, bouncing off the glossy tiles and further enhancing the brightness of the room. The combination of natural and artificial lighting created a welcoming, spacious vibe that made the bathroom feel airy and open.

Challenges Faced

The most challenging aspect of this renovation was reworking the old plumbing, especially where the washer had been located. The space had suffered from some structural issues, including water damage and a damaged subfloor, which required us to replace the subfloor and reroute the plumbing. While these issues added to the overall cost, careful planning to identify these issues during the initial onsite quote and smart material choices helped keep the budget on track.

Bathroom renovations can be expensive, but by prioritising the essentials and opting for cost-effective solutions, we were able to manage the costs effectively. Despite these challenges, we delivered a stunning new bathroom that’s both functional and visually appealing without blowing the budget.
